NGC Battle Report II: 200pt Kill Team Mission “Infiltrate the Camp”
Mission Report: F146-Corrin
Mission Status: Complete
Team Status: Injuries-Acceptable, Casualties-None
Mission Background:
In the Harkor system, on planet 52-14, being the 14th planet brought into compliance by the Dark Angels 52nd Expeditionary force during the crusade and named after the system to which is belongs, the Dark Angels created a outpost containing a small garrison of Astartes. It was known as a rotational outpost to the Dark Angels. A garrison comprising of combat battered Astartes, a strong enough force to hold off system invaders long enough for Imperial assistance to arrive; with a secondary mission to train up the local garrison fit for Imperial duty.
Mission Details: Infiltrate the planet with a small force, observe and report. Unit One: 2nd Scout squad, 10th Company, led by Sergeant Corrin.
After Action Report:
(Corrin)
Strike Cruiser Corax Vengeance moved into the system timing the entry with the known trajectory of scanner array from the main planet Harkor. Moving into low orbit on the blind side of the planet the populous would be unaware of the vessels presence.
Topographical imagery of the planet’s surface indicated several large ravines leading into the basin which contained the capital city of Kanir, on the far side of which was the Dark Angels outpost. Sergeant Corrin loaded his scout squad along with two Landspeeder Storms onto Thunderhawk Rogue IV. The plan was for the Thunderhawk to make planet fall then proceed to the most southern gorge taking utmost precaution to remain under scanner angle and drop off 2nd Scout Squad. Rogue IV would then return back to Corax Vengeance.
The squad moved up the gorge now mission named Shadow Valley. As we proceeded north the terrain became more jagged and started to look out of place from the topo imagery presented at the mission briefing. The squad started encountering imperial structures in a mass state of disrepair. I ordered the squad to halt action and await conformation of location. After reviewing the planetary records and imagery in the back of the Land Speeder Storm, the southern valleys are noted as agricultural valleys as their location in relation to the planets rotation made them ideal for such use. The valleys fed the industrial center and the capital of Kanir itself. Two things became apparent, the valleys were void of life and as it appears, void of imperial influence too.
The mission would now proceed with a great deal of caution. One storm was camouflaged and hidden from view in a side ravine following the order for half the squad to proceed on foot. I ordered the other half to remain with the other speeder on our flank. The punch of the assault cannon would be most welcome if any heavy resistance was encountered. The next several kilometers were much of the same, burned out valley with sporadic imperial ruin.
As we approached a small outlying imperial settlement my optical scanner detected movement in the ruins. I motioned for the squad to move slowly under cover. Kindle reported no vox cast activity. Movement had ceased as our squad neared the edge of a clearing in the center of the settlement. The location of the hamlet was in a natural choking point in the valley, leaving us no alternative to move around the potential ambush site.
The squad slipped across the courtyard unnoticed. When we neared the other side Kindle reported warning alarms from the storm; movement and armor. A swift optical scan revealed an imperial razorback set for ambush in the ruins near the storms position. The markings were not known to me, not that of our Astartes brethren, nor of the planetary defense force the 88th. Kindle reported the markings not present in the Astro Militarum archives. I ordered the storm into an aggressive posture against the armor. We could stand down if they were a friendly force unknown to us. The decision proved warranted. As our squad closed in it quickly became aware to us what we were up against upon seeing a horned beast in power armor. I ordered the razorback destroyed. It was not our mission to engage at this point, but it was clear we would not be able to pass without an engagement. We would destroy the heretics, first by preventing their escape.
The turbines of the storm whined under the sudden strain of propulsionary force. The riders dismounting as the storm gained flanking advantage on the razorback. The assault cannon roared to life but the strafe failed to breach the ruins. Applying pressure with suppression fire, the remainder of the squad broke from cover and closed the ground with the ruins. Yahnke was the first casualty as the ground erupted around him from the ever so familiar boltgun. Kindle, Iebech and Uhlyke engaged the razorback damaging it with krak grenades. A ripple of light crackled through the air penetrating through Duhgan, dropping the marine to his knees before finally slumping him to the ground. The origin was twisted marine. A vantage shot exploded a ball of plasma across Felle’s armor throwing him to the ground writhing in pain. Zahnen rushed for Felle pulling him into the cover of the ruins.
I ordered the squad to put all available firepower on the psyker and remove themselves from the range of the plasma gun post haste. Eon provided cover fire felling an enemy soldier as he and Uhdebeak hurried to recover their fallen comrades. The beastman raised his arms towards me, keeping my distance I powered up the graviton gun witnessing firsthand the buckling of its leg armor under the force of the arcane weapon. The smell of singed flesh filled the air as another crackling beam of warp energy left the psyker’s hands passing with a near miss, but I was not the intended target as Uhdebeak was lying on the ground, the warp charge still flashing across his body. The vox cast became active as Uhlyke informed the squad the armor threat had been removed, a quick glance revealed billows of smoke rising from its hull.
Iebech and Uhlyke take down another soldier who was in route to the blown razorback. Zahnen and Kindle move in on the horned psyker to buy the squad time to get away. The beastman’s armor proved to thick even under the strength of an enhanced human. The psyker gained the upper hand as he felled Zahnen and the situation was moving out of our advantage. I ordered the immediate break off of the engagement. As we made our way from the ruined settlement with our wounded, a swirling mass of black clouds opened up low in the atmosphere. I felt the power in the air as the warp energy mounted.
(Kindle)
Zahnen and I charged the heretic psyker. Its armor repelled all of our assaults. Zahnen fell to its cursed blade. The sky opened in a mass of swirling dark energy. The beastman appeared to evaluate his surroundings and quickly escaped into the warp. I recovered the rest of the wounded onto the storm and rejoined Sergeant Corrin and the rest of the squad.
(Corrin)
2nd Squad has since moved to a recovery position, deep inside the valley on the far outskirts of Kanir. The destruction of the imperial structures was not localized to the outer settlements. If the Dark Angels are protectorates of this system their presence is not evident.
Mission Report Concluded.
The razorback is detected and engaged.
2nd squad rushes to their wounded to pull them to cover.
With the razorback blown, the scouts are free to engage the enemy combatants under the threat of the beastman psyker.
