NGC Battle Report III: 200pt Kill Team Mission “Alone in the Dark”
Mission Report: E218.2-Balon-Deekon
Mission Status: Complete
Team Status: Injuries-Acceptable, Casualties-Scout Marine Emos
Mission Background:
The nearest system was JYLN-55. A small force of Adeptus Astartes from the Marines Errant Chapter was assisting an Imperial force there. After clearing the system from government corruption, the Imperial Guard were training and recruiting inhabitants to hold back the green tide that threatened the system. Their main facility was located on the planet known as Yule.
Mission Details: Infiltrate the planet with a small force, observe and report. Unit One: 1st Scout squad, 10th Company, led by Sergeant Balon.
After Action Report:
(Balon)
Our first encounter with the Marines Errant was followed by heavy patrols of our initial contact point. This proved to be advantageous to our unit and allowed 1st Squad to slip closer to the city. The small gains from our rapid escape quickly dissipated as patrol nets thickened and increased in frequency. 1st squad had been performing reconnaissance missions under the cover of darkness for two days searching for an entrance into the hive city, moving daytime positions ever closer to the city. The unit was in an out spread formation with the Landspeeder Storm hovering silently on the right flank. Brother Marines Wayne, Suhngrave and Airie took refuge inside the Storm while still recovering from injuries incurred during the previous engagement. Brother Marines Roe, Deekon and Solen were positioned on the far sweeping left flank. The closer the squad progressed to the city, the more out skirting inhabitants were found. Extra measures were taken to ensure the local populous was unaware of our presence.
We neared a power substation when the first bolter shots rang out. Brother Emos was blown back through the metal works that he had been weaving through. Caught off guard, I quickly assessed the situation. A rhino was approaching our position on the front left, the casings still arcing through the air from the storm bolters discharge of fire into our position. Talvus and Clayve sought cover behind remnants of an orbital escape pod wreckage. Unannounced to the pair a Marines Errant had flanked their position and opened fire. The tortuous scream could be heard from Talvus as the ceramite shoulder plate begins fusing with his flesh. Landspeeder Storm pilot Welsh was quick to react to the plasma flare, hard banking the Storm and bringing the assault cannon to life. The trail of spent ammunition blazed a line along the ground and through the marine, felling him. Brother Clayve, just as quick to react, stripped the smoldering shoulder plate from Talvus’s armor taking burnt flesh with it. Cauterizing liquid was applied to the exposed wound causing Talvus excruciating pain, but saving his arm. Once again bolter fire rang out attempting to damage the Landspeeder. The marine failed to notice Wayne as he burst through a ramshackle shelter wall with combat blade unsheathed.
More Marines Errant arrived on the right flank. At this point it is unclear whether we are facing two patrols or stumbled on an outpost. The vox channel whispered with activity as Roe announced he and Solen were making a move on the Rhino. Bolter fire erupted on the right flank. My optics focused in time to see Brother Clayve’s head reared back, his frame slump to his haunches and fall over Brother Talvus. The Storm weathering most of the fire had evaded belly side to incoming fire. On the left flank Roe and Solen’s pace picked up as Marines were disembarking the Rhino. Roe made a hard roll barely dodging a krak missile, the smoke end trails passing through the crux of his elbow. Solen closed ground quickly with the first Marine out of the Rhino. The marine was still trying to get his bearings as Solen hammer struck him with his bolt pistol knocking him unconscious. A marine had moved into some machinery to my left while I was drawing line of sight on a marine exiting the far side of the rhino. Ricocheting bolter rounds were all around me as I dropped to a knee and swung my bolter to bear. A round struck home and the marine dropped behind the machinery out of view. Another weighted whisper came over the vox announcing Suhngrave had blade hilted a marine and that he, Airie and Wayne were moving in on the right flank of the rhino’s position.
Two marines were standing over Talvus and Clayve. I knew at this point those marines had to be removed or our cover was blown. I ordered Suhngrave to divert the team’s attention to their recovery and the Storm to use the strength of its assault cannon to knockout the rhino. A tremendous concussive sound pounded off of hollow metal and my eardrums. Solen was lowering his forearm from his eyes, his krack grenade struck the tank but failed to halt the rhino. The flash caught the exiting marines off guard giving time for Roe to subdue one marine and quickly move onto the next. The rhino’s stormbolter already tracking Roe let out a quick burst sending Roe to the ground. The stormbolter’s spray continued as it swung to bring its sights on Solen. Solen’s leg buckled as a round exploded out the backside of his left leg. As I made my move on the rhino the ground seemed to give way around me and I crashed to the surface faster than I had just left it. Looking up I saw the impacts and heard the whirring sound of our assault cannon as rounds bounced off the side armor of the rhino. The Storm was on the flank of the rhino working around to obtain a rear shot. Suhngrave, Airie and Wayne were moving in on Talvus and Clayve’s position when a burst of promethium engulfed Suhngrave. He dropped to the ground frantically trying to reach his retardant powder so to starve the flame of oxygen. Deeken had dropped back and had been sprinting to the far right flank to gain the upper hand on the Marines flanking from that direction. Airie spotted Deeken approaching from the right flank and charged towards the marine armed with the flamethrower. Blown off his feet, Airie felt the impact before he saw it. Another marine had positioned himself next to the flamer. Promethium erupted again, this time Airie saw Deekon leaping through a wall of fire straight into the marine. Deekon’s shoulder brought up against the marines weapon forcing it into his own helmet sending him on his backside fighting for consciousness.
Our sudden show of force was more than the Marines Errant expected. Our numbers were unclear to them and the firepower of the Storm put us at the advantage. The Marines Errant pulled back, as did we. What they did not realize is that winning the skirmish or not, we were leaving on the side of the battlefield putting us closer to the hive city. I vox checked 1st squad only to find two brothers missing. Brother Emos, the first to fall took a critical wound through his ceremite chest plate. 1st squad failed to reach him with cauterizing liquid during the skirmish before he bleed to death. His raven skulls have been removed and will be sent to mark his honour in the Ravenspire. The loss of any talon is considered a great one to the Raven Guard.
Solen was the other marine that had failed to sound off during the vox check. Roe and I approached the position where we last saw him fall. The pool of blood still fresh from his leg wound was streaked along the ground in a direction toward the hive city wall. The signs were clear that he was being dragged by at least two persons. I ordered the squad ahead as Roe and I followed the tracks. They led us to a machinery outbuilding only a few hundred meters from the area of the skirmish. The decrepit shed showed no signs of life inside upon our arrival. The trail ended abruptly in the corner of the open space and no further signs of Solen or his captures were visible. Roe turned on his auspex revealing a tunnel entrance just below us. I traced the outer edge of the tunnel hatch and located the handle. It appears that Solen was removed from the battlefield by a local gang or enemy sympathizers. To make matters worse, Talvus informed me that he was clearly identified by one of the Marines Errant. For the mission to proceed it is clear that 1st squad needs to find darker shadows. Upon nightfall we take the tunnel.
