Inquisitor Doyen scanned the battlefield. He was on the far flank, the Fire Angels were ranged in a defensive line, holed up in some ruins, waiting for the Word Bearers. Next to Doyen, deep in their own ruined building, was the slab sided bulk of a Land Raider, filled with devotees of Khorne, led by the Dark Apostle Zhusov. Zhusov had little interest in Doyen and his psychic abilities, but he appreciated his role in the upcoming battle.
In front of Doyen was the enormous forms of three Obliterators. Doyen had never seen such things before, and even after the marvel of pure warp energy he had witnessed, they were impressive. To his right, just outside of their building was an armoured Rhino full of high strung worshippers of the god Slaanesh. Near them was a unit of cultists. Slavish, pathetic souls who’s minds had been corrupted years ago. Now they were ready to do the bidding of their power armoured masters. It was unlikely they would survive, and the Pantheon seemed pleased by this.
Doyen had met with the leader of this host, Akthanor. Almost the size of the Obliterators in front of him now, he was a giant in his black Terminator armour, his bodyguard, similarly clad but in the traditional Word Bearers red, always in attendance. Despite knowing that Doyen had been sent to help them, Akthanor seemed not to trust him.
As Doyen began to reach out to the warp and summon the protection they would need, battle was joined. Several stabs of light from enemy lascannons blasted into the Land Raider, detonating the ammo box for it’s Heavy Bolter, and damaging the drive systems. It wouldn’t be taking the berserk soldiers inside of it any closer to the Fire Angels. To his right, just outside the walls, a similar shot made the Rhino’s combi-bolter unusable, while another brought down one of the hulking Obliterators.
By this time, Doyen had pulled enough energy from the warp to raise a shield for protection. The Land Raider was emptied, but true to form, the warriors inside abandoned all tactical for bloodlust, and began a headlong charge toward a unit of Fire Angels Scouts in a nearby wood, leaving themselves horribly exposed, shield or no shield. The Land Raider also emptied it’s lascannon into a Fire Angels Rhino, causing it to detonate.
The return fire was immediate and brutal. The Word Bearers Rhino was destroyed, and 3 of the marines inside were lost. Half of the squad from the Land Raider was also gunned down. Doyen did his best to hold the lines, waiting for Akthanor and his Terminators who would arrive by teleporter and tear into the marine lines, but it was getting more and more difficult.
Power from the warp waned, and the field went down. The remaining Obliterators took this opportunity to put down a squad of Fire Angel Tactical Marines. The Land Raider fired upon and damaged their Razorback transport. The crazed Berzerkers continued their headlong rush into the Scout Squad, but became bogged down by a hastily set trap. The Cultists stumbled upon a Targeting Relay near a ruined shrine.
A Scout Squad concealed in the shrine opened fire on the Cultists. Their Targeting Relay making them a target, and six of them were felled while the rest ran away. The marines supporting them from the destroyed Rhino were in turn destroyed as well. Doyen looked on in shock, helpless as heavy fire also eliminated the Obliterators. With the unit slowed by the trap, the Scouts in the woods seized the initiative and charged them. They finished off the berserk warriors, but lost over half of their number in the ensuing close combat. Zhusov issued a challenge to the whelp leading them, and while he charged up his power fist, Zhusov’s mighty Crozius caved in his skull. It was a small bright point in what was otherwise complete devastation for the Word Bearers. Where was Akthanor and his bodyguard?
Doyen realized that some part of the Pantheon’s great plan must require their sacrifice, as he reached out to the warp once more, only to be thrown back into the side of the Land Raider by a powerful blast of energy. He slumped to the ground, and when he looked up, there were five Fire Angel marines standing over him. He had been captured.
