As Inquisitor Doyen was making his way back to Harkorn, he noticed a strange reading from a hulk that had appeared in the Collatus Sector. Upon further inspection, it appeared that at least part of the hulk was a remnant of a ship belonging to the Death Guard. While most of Doyen’s exposure to Chaos had been from the Word Bearers and Iron Warriors, he knew the Death Guard had sided with Chaos as well. He would have to find out why they were here, and if they could help further his goals.
Immediately upon landing and reuniting with the Capt. Sylvanus and the Harkorn 88th, he told the Captain to reach out to the Death Guard and arrange a meeting. Meanwhile Doyen met with his team to check their readiness. They had been recalled from searching for him as soon as he had been able to contact them, and now appeared ready and eager for some real action. They were disappointed when the Inquisitor told them they were simply going to meet with another ally. They gathered their gear and loaded into the Razorback.
Capt. Sylvanus, his command unit, and a unit of Veterans with a Chimera made their way to the meet, followed faithfully by Fulta’s Bane, repaired once again, and in their wake shambled several units of mutants. Their numbers had continued to grow since the last encounter with the Marines Errant. Sylvanus estimated somewhere around thirty of them in three loose groups following behind Fulta’s Bane like dogs, waiting for scraps.
Fulta’s Bane took up a covered position, and the Inquisitor’s Razorback sat next to Captain Sylvanus’ command. They had been rejoined by their psyker who had been incapacitated during the battle in which Doyen disappeared. He looked healthy, or at least as healthy as someone wracked by the power of the warp could look. The mutants milled about aimlessly. Sylvanus wished he could have made them stay back, but after what they did to the Marines Errant, no one dared tell them no.
Inquisitor Doyen watched the Death Guard. Seven marines in tactical dreadnought armour, almost ancient by the look of it. A Contemptor dreadnought stood sentinel nearby, while a rhino rumbled forward towards them. Doyen felt something seemed strange about these marines. With caution, he sent the veterans forward in their Chimera. They slowed to a halt and disembarked, standing at attention in front of it. The rhino slowed, turned to its side to mimic the Chimera, and the marines, 10 of them, also disembarked. Their clean white armour and green accents glinting in the sun. They seemed to take in the veterans for a moment, but before Doyen could come forward to meet with them, the dreadnoughts twin assault cannons spun up and rounds began flying at the chimera. In a matter of seconds its hide was riddled, and it became disabled as the veterans in front of it dove for cover. There was none to be found however, and as they looked up they saw the marines running at them full force. Doyen watched in shock as they were butchered to a man. He had no idea what was going on here, but he didn’t hesitate a moment. Giving the order to fire, Fulta’s Bane blew huge holes into the side of the Death Guard rhino with its plasma cannons, leaving it a smoking ruin. The command unit fired their lascannon at the terminators in the distance, to no effect. Doyen’s Razorback fired on the marines and two of them fell. The psyker drew upon the warp and directed it at the marines. Their demeanor changed and they stopped where they were and seemed to look around in confusion. Two groups of mutants used the distraction to charge into the marines, taking out three of them for a loss of three of their own. The psyker followed in their wake, eager to seek retribution for the veterans.
As the scrum continued, the Contemptor opened fire on Captain Sylvanus and his Command Unit, killing his heavy weapons crew and one of his top lieutenants. Only Sylvanus and Helborg survived, Helborg with the standard still held high in defiance. As blades and claws swirled in the melee, three more of the Death Guard were brutally put down, but the remaining two held their ground. Their legendary courage, and stubbornness, on full display.
Inquisitor Doyen ordered his Razorback to circle around and try to reach the Death Guard lines and find out what had caused them to open fire. Meanwhile, Fulta’s Bane sent the Contemptor reeling with several shots of plasma from his Executioner cannon. The two marines fighting the mutants became ferocious in their desperation, slaughtering several of them, along with the psyker. Several of the mutants turned to flee, but more stayed in the fight, crazed and slavering.
The cursed Contemptor turned, tracked Inquisitor Doyen’s Razorback, and let loose with its assault cannons, leaving the Razorback dead in its tracks. Inquisitor Doyen and his men disembarked, and continued trying to reach the Death Guard lines. The terminators made short work of the fleeing mutants, while their leader waded into the combat with the rest of the mutants and butchered 5 more, while one more marine succumbed to their fury. There were only a few left, but they would give no ground.
Seeing/hearing/sensing what was happening to their brethren, the other group of mutants moved out of cover. Inquisitor Doyen continued his desperate gamble, Tank firing wildly at the Contemptor. Fulta’s Bane continued hurling plasma death, taking out two of the Death Guard terminators in the process. Two more mutants are lost in the melee, but the last one has no quit in him. Sylvanus can’t help but admire his dedication, regardless of what fuels it.
The Contemptor zeroes in on the henchmen as they run for the Death Guard lines. Its guns blaze and Whispers, Sergeant Beck, Makk, and Griff all end up on the ground. The mighty dreadnought begins a thundering charge, and as Inquisitor Doyen fumbles at his belt for something to deal with it, Tank takes careful aim with his plasma gun, and fires, stopping it mid-stride, it crumpled to the dirt with an explosion of rubble erupting around it. There is no time to lose, as the Death Guard terminators help to finish off the last mutant, of the assault, and their leader marches towards Doyen, while the rest of them, and the Sergeant with his power fist began to head for Sylvanus.
Just as things looked dark for the Captain, Fulta’s Bane came around the corner, and unleashed on the terminators, firing over the heads of the last group of mutants. The Sergeant from the tactical squad and one of the terminators found themselves engulfed, but the last two terminators strode on. The mutants had other ideas however, launching an assault at the Death Guard, running over their own dead as the terminators opened fire, and overwhelming them before they even had a chance to strike. As they stood there, looking around, breathing heavily, they saw in the distance, Inquisitor Doyen falling as the Death Guard commander’s sword sliced into his armour.
Doyen had time to wonder if it was indeed his faith that was lacking, before everything went black. Tank Tancredo could only stare at the Death Guard leader, before backing away and tearing into a full run. Knowing he had to regroup, and return to both the Inquisitor and the rest of his men, and see if any of them were still alive. But he couldn’t, not yet, and continued to run…
